Best Spots & Things to Do in Maui

Maui, the Valley Isle, is famous for its natural beauty — think waterfalls, black sand beaches, and towering volcanoes. It’s a paradise for outdoor lovers, whether you’re driving the Road to Hana or snorkeling in clear waters off Molokini Crater.

Road to Hana

Drive the Road to Hana

Discover waterfalls, rainforests, and dramatic seascapes along this winding coastal road. Make stops at Twin Falls, Waiʻānapanapa State Park, and the Seven Sacred Pools.

Haleakalā National Park

Watch Sunrise at Haleakalā National Park

Experience the otherworldly sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā, standing above the clouds at over 10,000 feet.

Molokini Crater

Snorkel at Molokini Crater

Take a boat tour to this protected marine sanctuary for some of the clearest snorkeling in Hawaii.

Dont Forget

  • Reserve your Haleakalā sunrise permit in advance — it’s required.
If you plan to witness the famous sunrise from the summit of Haleakalā National Park, you must book your reservation online in advance (available 60 days prior and a few held back for 2 days ahead). Spots sell out quickly, especially during high season, so plan early to secure your chance to see the sunrise above the clouds.

  • Bring snacks and plenty of water when driving the Road to Hana — shops are sparse along the way.
The Road to Hana is a full-day adventure with limited places to buy food and drinks along its 64-mile stretch of winding roads. Pack a cooler with local fruits, sandwiches, and lots of water to stay energized, and be prepared for a picnic at one of the scenic stops or beaches.

  • Use reef-safe sunscreen to protect Hawaii’s fragile marine life.
Hawaii has banned sunscreens containing oxybenzone and octinoxate to help preserve coral reefs. Make sure you’re using reef-safe sunscreen (look for zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the active ingredients) when swimming, snorkeling, or just relaxing at the beach.

Insider Tips

  • For a quieter alternative to the Road to Hana, explore Upcountry Maui.
Escape the crowds by visiting the cooler, lush slopes of Upcountry Maui, where you’ll find charming cowboy towns like Makawao and Kula. Stop by the beautiful Ali‘i Kula Lavender Farm, sample goat cheese at Surfing Goat Dairy, or visit the MauiWine estate for a unique pineapple wine tasting.

  • If you’re snorkeling Molokini Crater, choose an early morning tour for calmer seas and clearer visibility.
Tours that depart around 6:00 AM offer the best conditions — before the trade winds pick up and crowds arrive. Early trips also increase your chances of spotting vibrant marine life like parrotfish, eels, and even manta rays in crystal-clear waters.

  • Visit Little Beach at sunset — it’s a local favorite with a free-spirited vibe.
Just a short walk over a lava outcrop from Big Beach in Makena State Park, Little Beach is known for its laid-back, clothing-optional atmosphere. On Sunday evenings, it comes alive with spontaneous drum circles, fire dancers, and sunset gatherings — a unique Maui tradition that offers a glimpse of its free-spirited local culture.
