Best Time to Visit Tanzania
When is the Best Time to Visit Tanzania?
The best time to visit Tanzania is from June to October and January to February. These dry seasons offer the best wildlife viewing conditions, including the Great Migration in the Serengeti and excellent visibility on Mount Kilimanjaro. While Tanzania is a year-round destination, the dry months bring optimal conditions for safaris, beach visits (especially in Zanzibar), and climbing adventures.
Tanzania Month-by-Month Guide
Green Season (March–May)
From March to May, Tanzania experiences its long rainy season, with heavy but often short-lived downpours, particularly in the afternoons. It’s the greenest time of year, with stunning landscapes and fewer tourists, but road conditions in some areas can be challenging.
Weather: Rainy and lush; average temps range from 70°F to 84°F (21°C to 29°C).
Best For: Budget travelers, birdwatchers (migratory species), and photographers who enjoy dramatic skies and lush greenery.
Events: Easter festivities, Karibu Travel & Tourism Fair (early June, Arusha)
Dry Season (June–October)
This is the peak safari season with warm, dry weather, especially ideal for wildlife spotting in national parks like Serengeti, Tarangire, and Ngorongoro. Animals gather around waterholes, and the bush is less dense.
Weather: Cool mornings and evenings, sunny days; temps range from 59°F to 81°F (15°C to 27°C).
Best For: Safaris, climbing Kilimanjaro, and visiting Zanzibar’s beaches.
Events: Great Migration (river crossings in northern Serengeti: July–August), Kilimanjaro Marathon (June)
Short Rains (November–December)
This is a lighter rainy season, often consisting of quick showers that don’t disrupt travel too much. It’s a quieter and more affordable time to visit.
Weather: Light rains, warm temps; 73°F to 86°F (23°C to 30°C).
Best For: Budget safaris, peaceful Zanzibar visits, green landscapes.
Hot & Dry Season (January–February)
This is a mini dry season between the two rainy periods. It’s ideal for safaris and trekking before the long rains return.
Weather: Hot and sunny; 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C).
Best For: Wildlife watching (calving season in southern Serengeti), climbing Mount Meru or Kilimanjaro.
Events: Sauti za Busara Music Festival (Zanzibar, February)

Temperature Ranges
Tanzania’s temperatures vary by region and elevation: Coastal/Island areas (e.g., Zanzibar): Warm year-round, 75°F to 90°F (24°C to 32°C). Inland/Safari parks (e.g., Serengeti, Ngorongoro): Cooler, especially in the mornings and evenings: 59°F to 81°F (15°C to 27°C). Mountains (e.g., Kilimanjaro): Can drop below freezing at high elevations.
Dry Season: June – October, and January – February
Ideal for safaris and mountain trekking. Less humidity, clearer skies, and excellent wildlife visibility.
Rainy Seasons:
Long Rains: March – May
Heavy, consistent rain — best avoided for safaris, but great for lush scenery and fewer tourists.
Short Rains: November – December
Less intense rain, still possible to travel and enjoy most areas.
Trade Winds and Their Effects
Tanzania’s coastal areas, especially Zanzibar and the Indian Ocean islands, are influenced by two main monsoon wind systems:
Kaskazi (Northeast monsoon): Blows from December to March – warm, humid air.
Kusi (Southeast monsoon): Blows from June to October – brings cooler, drier air.
These winds help regulate temperatures, influence sea conditions for diving and sailing, and bring rain during the transitional months.

My husband and I wanted to take a last-minute trip to Mexico in May, and Kika did an amazing job of making that happen for us. She was able to find a great all-inclusive for us within our budget that met our needs and expectations for the trip. She was extremely easy to work with and kept us fully updated throughout the planning phase. She is so easy-going and personable! I would highly recommend using Kika to help you book your next getaway. Matt Roush19 May 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Sylvie at the Travel Byrds really took the time to get to know my wife and me, asking us about our preferred travel/vacation style (some structured activities but a lot of free time, nice but not over-the-top opulent accommodations), and delivered to us a plan for the perfect anniversary Hawaii trip. It was just marvelous, and we plan to use her services again for our next adventure -- and we heartily recommend her! We had never been to Italy and didn’t know anything about where to begin planning a trip and she handled it all for us. We loved everything she planned - the hotels, the restaurants, the tours, the cities- everything was very easily laid out for us. Her pre departure call helped us a lot with learning how to navigate the train station along with tips for traveling international. Every vendor she booked was on time and great to work with while we were there. Gina planned our dream trip and it was nothing short of amazing! Highly recommend using Gina for all your travel needs! She planned a perfect mix of history, shopping, sightseeing, adventure, and relaxation—with plenty of amazing food and wine, of course. Aryal really listened to what we wanted, gave smart and thoughtful recommendations, and was ALWAYS available for questions—before and during the trip, day or night. Everything was super organized in the app, making it easy to follow along and feel confident in every step. Even with it being an extra busy time in Italy (thanks to the Pope and the Year of Jubilee), Aryal ensured we could still do everything we hoped for—and more. Her communication was clear, timely, and personal. Couldn’t recommend her and Travel Byrds more highly! She was very attentive to what we wanted, while also providing unforgettable options/excursions. She planned everything from hotels, transportation, reservations, etc; which caused me no anxiety and the ability to truly enjoy the trip. The trip was a huge success! We will definitely use Felicia again. Matthew Whittlesey21 April 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. We used Travel Byrds and Sylvie for the first time to plan our European trip to Italy and France and we could not have been happier! Planning a trip like this – 2 countries, 4 towns, 5 flights (and 2 trains!) was daunting enough from a logistical perspective but Sylvie set us up with everything we needed! She coordinated the travel, the timing, arranged drivers when they were needed, helped us navigate challenges in real time and even provided us with an app that consolidated everything in one place! We all met in advance of the trip several times to work out ideas, talk hotels, plan dinner reservations and of course, discuss the things we wanted to do! All we really had to do was follow the daily schedule and enjoy the experiences! Her personal relationships with many of the providers ensured that we were well taken care of and that our events would be great! From walking the streets of Pompeii with our own private tour guide to lunch on the Amalfi Coast through cocktails in the shadow of the Coliseum, we crossed the pond to come home with memories of a lifetime and cannot thank Sylvie and Travel Byrds enough! Note to self - Always ask Monica Bowen to make the arrangements for a vacation in Ireland or anywhere else. She gets six stars (because five are not enough) for finding a lovely cottage in Lahinch, Co. Clare. I am sharing a photo of the view from the deck. The itinerary was cleverly laid out with maps, phone numbers and suggestions of what to see. Monica will do all the work so that you can enjoy and not fret about a single thing. Thank you, Monica, so very much! Stacia C18 April 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Nikki, our travel agent, was assigned to us for an international trip to the Canary Islands and Spain. I began working with Travel Byrds 3 months prior to our trip. The positive aspects were great. The experiences we booked were incredible, most hotels were lovely and the birthday surprises were truly special. The details in one app and the need to know list were extremely helpful and convenient. Most recommendations were thoughtful. However, the negatives were significant. Nikki’s attention to detail was lacking. She delayed follow-ups until the holiday week and conveniently blamed staff shortages due to the time of the year. Small but important, we were missing also missing a tour voucher in the app. There was a major issue with Marriott. Nikki claimed that she resolved this issue. The information for the last hotel would not appear in the Marriott app which was very concerning. I had been booked under a different name for check-in (no clue why), which caused a discrepancy for adding additional points to my Bonvoy account. I personally contacted Marriott to resolve the issue, and the process was quite lengthy. Lastly, we had agreed to a hotel recommendation that was extremely outdated and failed to meet the standards of the other accommodations we had booked. I would definitely use Travel Byrds again, but with a different travel agent. carrie ferguson9 April 2025Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google. Krista Friar planned some great outings for me and a friend in Iceland and Germany. After asking us about what we wanted to see, she booked us for sightseeing and lodging. Some highlights included waterfalls and black sand beach on the south coast of Iceland. In Germany, we enjoyed museums and historical sites. I would welcome her again on my next trip planning team.
