At Travel Byrds, we are proud to introduce Alex Harmeyer, our travel expert, whose professional background and life experience shape the way she approaches travel with intention, empathy, and care.
By day, Alex is a licensed social worker. She is also a wife, a mother to a beautiful baby girl, an exercise enthusiast, a passionate foodie, and an avid traveler who believes the most meaningful journeys are rooted in connection. These different roles influence how she experiences the world and how she believes travel should feel: thoughtful, grounded, and respectful of place.
Hawaii offered Alex exactly that. Beyond its breathtaking scenery, it provided moments of stillness, cultural awareness, and reflection that stayed with her long after the journey ended. What made Hawaii unforgettable was not how much there was to see, but how deeply each experience was felt.
A Sunrise That Changed Everything
Some moments define an entire journey. For Alex, that moment came before dawn at the summit of Haleakalā. “I had so many memorable experiences in Maui,” Alex shares. “It’s hard to decide which was the most memorable. But seeing the sunrise at the top of Haleakalā was truly magical.” Standing above the clouds as the sky slowly shifted from darkness to light was breathtaking. But what transformed the experience into something unforgettable was what followed. As the sun rose, Alex was blessed to hear an oli, a traditional Hawaiian chant welcoming the morning.

“I was blessed to hear an oli welcoming the sunrise,” she recalls. “It brought tears to my eyes.” In that moment, Haleakalā felt less like a scenic viewpoint and more like a sacred space. The experience left Alex with a deep sense of gratitude and respect for the land and its people. It was a reminder that Hawaii is not simply a destination to be admired, but a place to be honored.
Finding Meaning in the Unexpected
While Hawaii is known for its iconic landscapes, some of Alex’s most meaningful moments came from places far less expected. One of her favorite discoveries was Oyako Tei, a small mom and pop restaurant tucked away in Kahului. “One of my favorite hidden gems wasn’t a tourist site at all,” Alex says. “It was a little mom and pop restaurant we found in Kahului. You know it’s good when you’re the only tourist there.”

The food was hearty, comforting, and generous. The kind of meal that feels personal and unpretentious, the kind that reminds you why locals return again and again. “The breakfast was filling and the portions were large,” Alex laughs. “I crave it often.”
It was a simple experience, but a memorable one, and a reminder that some of the best travel moments happen when you slow down, follow curiosity, and allow space for the unexpected.
Respect for Land, Culture, and Community
Throughout her time in Hawaii, one thing stood out everywhere Alex went: the deep pride and love Hawaiians have for their islands.
“The fierce love and pride Hawaiians have for the island is so apparent,” Alex reflects. “Everywhere we went, you could feel the appreciation the locals and natives have for the land, the food, the ocean, the mountains, the volcanoes, everything.”
That respect was woven into everyday life. It showed up in conversations, traditions, and the way people spoke about their connection to the land. Hearing the oli at Haleakalā remained especially meaningful. “That experience will forever be one of my favorite cultural moments,” Alex says.
It reinforced the importance of traveling with awareness and humility. Hawaii offers incredible beauty, but it also asks visitors to listen, learn, and show respect.
Balancing the Known and the Unplanned
Alex believes the most rewarding trips strike a thoughtful balance. “I like to balance my trips equally between tourist hotspots and off the beaten path locations,” she explains. There is value in seeing Hawaii’s well known highlights, but there is just as much value in leaving space for unplanned moments. “I’ll have days dedicated to the big sights,” Alex says, “but I also love those down days where I can just get in the car and drive.”
Those unstructured days often lead to the most meaningful discoveries. “I love those unpredictable, unplanned days,” she adds. “You never know where you’ll find yourself.” This approach allows Hawaii to unfold naturally, without pressure or rush.
One Experience Worth the Drive
If there is one experience Alex consistently encourages travelers not to miss, it is continuing past the Road to Hana to Waiʻānapanapa State Park. “Drive to Waiʻānapanapa State Park and stick your toes in the black sand beach,” Alex recommends. “It’s a great stop near the end of the Road to Hana.” The dramatic contrast of black sand, lava rock, and bright blue ocean feels otherworldly. Sea caves carve into the coastline, and hiking trails wind through raw volcanic terrain. “Explore the sea caves and the hiking trails,” Alex says. “The drive is long, but you won’t regret it.” It is a place that captures Hawaii’s raw beauty and powerful natural forces.

What Hawaii Teaches You
Hawaii teaches patience. It teaches respect. It reminds you that travel is not about checking boxes, but about presence. For Alex, this journey reinforced an important truth. The most meaningful travel experiences are shaped by intention. They are built on listening, learning, and allowing space for moments you cannot plan. That philosophy shapes how Alex approaches travel planning, ensuring journeys feel balanced, thoughtful, and deeply connected to place.
Experiencing Hawaii with Purpose
Hawaii has a way of staying with you long after the trip ends. For Alex, Hawaii was more than a destination. It was an invitation to travel more thoughtfully, to appreciate culture, and to respect the land. With the right approach, Hawaii becomes more than a vacation. It becomes a memory that shapes how you experience the world.
